Dramatic Brazilian DTH growth
By Chris Forrester
DTH broadcasting is very definitely in vogue for Brazilian subscribers. A slew of appealing data from Brazil’s National Telecoms Agency shows that DTH growth – at cable’s expense – is steadily rising. Penetration for satellite DTH shows penetration now stands at 42.8 per cent of homes.
Via Embratel is credited with generating this new enthusiasm, helped by spectacular 48 per cent growth in its own subs y-o-y (and at Q2/2010). Via Embratel has been operational for about two years.
Research company PTS say that in 2Q2010, Sky, the main DTH player, recorded a 9 per cent growth as compared to the previous quarter, whereas, other operators, such as Telef?nica, Oi and Nossa TV, growth was stable and even negative in some cases. DTH market share recorded in June amounted to a 64 per cent for Sky, 19 per cent for Embratel and 17 per cent for the rest of the operators together.
Sky has 2.1m subs, Via Embratel some 655,000 and transmits from Embratel’s Star One satellite.
