MBC & Qatar Media to make Farooq the Great bio
by Sean Williams on Oct 3, 2010
MBC and Qatar Media have announced production of a history epic based on the life of Caliph Farooq the Great. The biographical feature, called Omar (a popular shortening of the Caliph's name), was announced on Thursday (Sept 30) in Dubai by MBC chairman Sheikh Waleed Al Ibrahim alongside Qatar Media Corporation's Sheikh Faisal Bin Jassim Al Thani. It's the broadcaster's largest historical TV drama to-date, and is set to air next Ramadan (2011).
Full name Al-Farooq Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, Farooq the Great was the second Muslim Caliph and widely regarded as one of the most powerful Muslim leaders of all time. Presiding over the Rashidun Caliphate he was a great friend of the prophet Muhammad, and earned the nickname 'Separator of Truth from False' thanks to his law-making skills.
The show, written by Walid Saif and directed by Hatem Ali, is to be dubbed into a plethora of languages including Urdu, Malay, Persian, English and French. With Ramadan advertising rates on the rise, MBC will be pinning a large amount of its yearly revenue on the title.
