London says goodbye to analogue and all that
April 17, 2012 20.58 Europe/London By Julian Clover
London will tonight pull the curtain down on 75 years of analogue broadcasts at midnight tonight (Tuesday).
Serving 5 million people, some 18% of the population, the Crystal Palace transmitter is receiving the attention of BBC director-general Mark Thompson, Arqiva CEO John Cresswell, broadcaster Sir David Attenborough and prime minister David Cameron, when some of the smaller regions could barely muster a local TV presenter.
Transmission company Arqiva will mark the completion of London switchover by lighting up Crystal Palace tower on the nights of April 18th and 19th.
52 relay transmitters will also be affected by the move, which will allow higher power for the DTT ‘Freeview’ channels, as well as freeing up capacity for mobile broadband services.
“Behind the scenes, the scale of this national infrastructure project is immense,” said Cresswell. “By completion in October we will have transformed a network that took 25 years build in only five years, transforming this vital public service into a modern platform that will meet the evolving TV viewing needs of the UK population.”
Recent moves within the WRC frequency allocation conference effectively extinguished any hope that broadcasters might be able to acquire further capacity for themselves.
Those who thought that the shift from analogue to digital broadcasting took an age – no mention of On Digital in the pre-switch publicity – should note that although the first colour test transmissions took place from Crystal Palace in November 1956, it was not until 1967 that the first regular colour broadcasts took place.
Sir David Attenborough, the naturalist who was controller of BBC Two at the time said: “With the switch to digital TV, we’re celebrating the start of a new, very exciting time in UK broadcasting when viewers will have more channels to choose from and a better viewing experience than ever before. This is as wonderful as anything I’ve experienced in my 60 years of working in the TV industry.”
Northern Ireland and North East England will be switched off before the end of the year.
