THE VP of Microsoft game studios, Phil Spencer has ruled out sticking 3D technology on the Vole's XBox.
While the rest of the entertainment industry likes the idea of things flying at your face and shoving every film it can onto 3D, Spencer is not following Sony and Nintendo in rushing to put it on Microsoft's entertainment console.
Spencer called recent exploration of 3D gaming as "a science experiment" and claimed the Vole is trying to do things that millions of people can go enjoy right now.
He told CNN that people just don't really have TVs in their house right now that are going to do 3D in a way that's going to work.
Spencer might have a point. While sales of the Xbox 360 are on an upswing, the trends don't correlate with demand for 3D televisions. Shipments of 3D TVs this year will end up below industry expectations. Many are not expecting anything serious to happen in that market until next year.
Spencer said that he liked Nintendo's 3DS because "you don't have to wear the glasses." Sony on the other hand thinks that the 3D-with-glasses idea is brilliant.
However Spencer said that as the maker of a games console he should not be trying to sell you a telly and that the need for glasses could be 3D's Achilles' heel.
"You just can't have a bunch of people sitting around the living room wearing $150 glasses each," he said. Well, not outside of Italy, anyway.
"Trying to get a bunch of people playing together in a room where not everybody sees the same thing ... is kind of a weird disconnect to me," he continued.
The Vole is spending money on research and development programmes relating to 3D and the outfit does flog a few 3D games.
But Spencer said that Batman: Arkham Asylum for the Xbox 360, which comes with a pair of 3D glasses, was too much like a science experiment rather than something that's going to go touch millions
