  • ETB renews its interest in Pay-TV

The telecommunications company ETB, incumbent in Bogota, Colombia, is planning to enter the Pay-TV market with its own platform, since at present, the service is offered jointly with DirecTV, as confirmed by its President, Fernando Carrizosa, who stated that the company is studying the business model to be followed. One alternative is to render IPTV services, since the Government has already granted authorization. Another option is to rely on its own or rented satellite technology.

The alternatives taken into account by the company to Pay-TV "are being discussed and analyzed according to its indebtedness capacity and investment return", stated Carrizosa during an interview with newspaper La Rep?blica de Colombia.

In 2009, the Ministry of IT and Communications authorized ETB to render IPTV services. At that moment, the company had announced that no investments would be made in that technology until a strategic partner is defined. However, such research "has been cancelled". "We have not cancelled the study of new short term alternatives and other possibilities that we need to revise again and make them as feasible as possible for the company to achieve the best results", the executive pointed out.

ETB relies on the so-called Broadband Remote Unit technology, developed by its engineers and patented in May 2010. It is made up by several stations that increase Internet connection speed (guaranteeing 20Mpbs), a key factor for IPTV
