  • BBC creates 3D 'Strictly' short film

The BBC has reportedly filmed a three-minute sequence from Strictly Come Dancing in 3D as part of ongoing trails of the new technology.

Titled Tango Unleashed, the 3D short film features professional dancer Flavia Cacace and her male partner performing an Argentinean tango.

The sequence was filmed last Friday and will be screened at selected UK cinemas and TV retailers in the run-up to Children in Need on November 19, reports Broadband TV News.

Tango Unleashed, which follows a 3D trailer shown earlier in the year for the new series of Doctor Who, was produced using three separate 3D rigs brought in by BBC Studios.

The production was overseen by Strictly Come Dancing director Nikki Parsons with the help of 3Ality Digital's stereographer Scott Steele.

Earlier this month, Sky launched Europe's first dedicated 3D TV channel to around 3m Sky+ HD subscribers in the UK and the Republic Of Ireland.

However, the BBC's head of 3D and HD Danielle Nagler said that production of the 3D short film does not mean the BBC intends to launch a 3D channel.

"It is going to be very clearly packaged as an event for Children in Need and we wouldn't want to suggest in any sense that we're doing a 3D channel. I think channels are a very different proposition to individual pieces of content," Nagler said.

"When you produce a channel you're pushing content out to an audience and everything you know about 3D at the moment is that people select to pull it, selecting the film, and putting on the glasses and that's very different to watching Strictly on a Saturday night."

The corporation recently ran trials of super high definition and 3D broadcasts towards the aim of using the technology at the London 2012 Olympics.

Nagler said that the BBC's 3D content could be delivered to licence fee payers in future via the iPlayer, although that would require some reconfiguration work.

"Part of our thinking around a pipeline of projects is how we can distribute content as widely as possible. It is quite important as consoles have 3D and more and more people have laptop and smaller screen capability and connected-TVs that we think about how we can use iPlayer as a way to get limited pieces of content to people," she said.

"For us the goal is what we make in 3D can be accessed by audiences, without paying a premium for it, I would bet that in five years time that will be possible.

"I think it will be one-offs, we're starting with three minutes, it could be in five years we choose to make a whole series in 3D but I don't think it will be every night of the week peaktime on BBC One is in 3D."
