Operators leveraging DLNA for converged multi-screen services
Pay-TV operators are using the new open-standard secure media environment created by DLNA and DTCP-IP to create a multi-screen home experience for their subscribers, according to a new report from IMS Research.
The report adds that using the standards mentioned above, as well as new remote user interface protocols under development, subscribers will be able to seamlessly transition a search, navigation or viewing experience from their TV to their tablet to their PC - and back again.
Meanwhile, one of the key drivers behind convergence in home entertainment and personal CE devices is named as being the accelerated uptake of mobile broadband services and capable devices. In addition to growing fixed broadband penetration (predicted to exceed 477mn homes globally by the end of 2010), mobile broadband is becoming a "significant" enabler for delivery of services and content to a multitude of personal entertainment devices.
“Rollout of 3G networks, introduction of WiMAX and LTE, and the growth of smartphones, has created a new opportunity for CE suppliers and carriers," said Anna Hunt, Principal Analyst and author of the report. "Cellular modems are starting to be integrated into a variety of devices, and are currently most common in netbooks, tablets and e-book readers. As the number of CE devices with embedded modems grow, so will the opportunities for service providers to offer a variety of data plans and managed multi-screen services.”
By the end of 2015, IMS Research is predicting that over 3bn mobile broadband-enabled devices (including smartphones) will be installed globally.
