Oi will expand its service in Brazil in 2011
The Brazilian DTH Oi started the commercialization of its service in new states of such country. To such ends, it offers those already subscribed to its telephony services, a USD 20 promotional basic package that includes 28 channels, the STB and the antenna. Additionally, according to Pedro Ripper, Oi Strategy and Technological Development Director, in 2011, the company forecasts it will render DTH services across the whole country, since, despite its national coverage, it used to operate only in some regions.
Teletime site informed that the DTH is currently commercialized in the states of Alagoas, Distrito Federal, Goi?s, Para?ba, Pernambuco, Cear? and Rio Grande do Norte. In 1Q2011, the service will be available in the whole country, including Sao Paulo. Therefore, the company gains a leading position regarding other DTH growth, such as Embratel, which would reach a million subscribers before year end.
Another 2011 strategy of the company would be aimed at launching a pre-paid service, which is currently being tested at a small scale and will be targeted to those who have cellular telephony rather than fixed telephony provided by the company.
Before its expansion over new regions, Oi service was present only in Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Paran?, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia, Sergipe and Esp?rito Santo. According to Teleco, as of 1Q2010 closing, the company recorded 265,000 subscribers. The main DTH in subscriber number is Sky with 2,1 million clients recorded in June 2010.
