ITV hands VOD operations to Red Bee Media

Red Bee MediaVirgin MediaUKTVDigital TVITV has hired Red Bee Media to mange and deliver its video on-demand content on a variety of platforms, including ITV.com, iTunes and Virgin Media.
Each week, Red Bee - which was previously BBC Broadcast - will transcode ITV's broadcast quality content into VOD and catch-up TV formats for distribution on platforms in the UK and around the world.
The company will also provide digital workflows of scheduled programmes for ITV's transmission centres, as well as manage more than 10,000 hours of archive ITV content.
In August, ITV confirmed plans for a major expansion of its ITV Player catch-up TV service to multiple platforms, starting with Sony's PlayStation 3 console.
"Catch-up TV is revolutionising the TV experience and it is vital for ITV to be at the forefront of that change," said Helen Stevens, ITV's director of broadcast resources.
"The appointment of Red Bee Media gives us access to sophisticated technology and expertise that is essential for ITV's content to take its place on the various emerging video platforms and to grow its digital media offering."
The deal with ITV follows Red Bee's recent contract to manage all VOD operations for Channel 5, including Five On-Demand and the broadcaster's deal with YouTube.
Red Bee Media chief executive Bill Patrizio said: "We are delighted to be appointed to ITV's media management business following on from our earlier appointment to manage the media workflow of ITV's iPhone web application.
"The content partnership with ITV is a significant achievement for Red Bee Media which already, through its state-of-the-art media facility, works for an array of leading broadcasters including BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, UKTV and VMtv [now The Living TV Group].
"Our platform and the breadth of our services save broadcasters time and money but most importantly allows them to keep pace with the rapidly changing media world."
