10 million cable modem susbcribers are recorded in Latin America
According to a study carried out by Dataxis Intelligence, as of 2010 firs semester closing, 10 million cable modem broadband susbcribers were recorded in Latin America, which accounts about 50% of cable TV subscribers. If compared with the same period in 2009, a 22.7% growth was recorded.
According to the aforementioned research work, the service has important expansion potential, since cable TV has always been the most popular platform in the region. In 2Q09, susbcribers amounted to 8,14 millions. In 1Q10, 9,64 million clients were recorded. The 10 million recorded users account for half the clients held by cable TV; whereas in Europe, for instance, such figure amounts to a 33%.
The main Latin American operator, with a 31% market share is the Brazilian Net, with 3,1 million broadband susbcribers, followed by the Argentine Cablevisi?n with a million subscribers. A court from La Plata city issued a ruling by means of which the application and execution of the Argentine Communications Secretary's resolution 100/10, which established Fibertel (brand utlized by Cablevisi?n to commercialize Internet services) license invalidity, was suspended. The case will be passed to the Federal Justice.
