Slingbox gets Freeview tuner and goes HD
Sling Media, the company behind the ingenious Slingbox, has launched the PRO-HD version. Designed to stream AV content from your home to a laptop or mobile anywhere in the world, Slingbox is popular with travellers, but has also found favour with home networking fans.
Costing £250, the SlingBox Pro HD can support over-the-air DVBT digital signals, HDTV cable or satellite receivers, HD PVRs, and a wide variety of other devices. What it doesn't do is record anything; it acts purely as a streaming device between your media storage and a computer, or with the SlingCatcher add-on, to a mobile device.
Eventually Sling Media aims to have the technology built into a range of set-top boxes and TVs from an assortment of manufacturers. Meanwhile, also launched was SlingBox.com, an online version of the SlingBox software client, so you can stream your TV to any computer without having to download any software.
By offering multiple looping inputs and outputs, Sling Box aims to be compatible with most household equipment; but one notable omission is an HDMI connector.
