ActiveVideo Demo Rides On Cisco VOD
Vendors Show Interactive Cisco Content Delivery System
By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 9/9/2010 2:43:15 PM
ActiveVideo Networks will demonstrate its interactive TV system running on Cisco Systems' video-on-demand infrastructure at the IBC trade show in Amsterdam.
In the demo, ActiveVideo's CloudTV Platform software will run on Cisco's Content Delivery System (CDS). The system will let users navigate an interactive program guide application on an Apple iPad tablet to select live, time-shifted or VOD content, and then watch it on TV or directly on their iPad over a Wi-Fi network in a simulated home environment.
ActiveVideo-Cisco demoThe work ActiveVideo is doing with Cisco is not exclusive. "We're working with the preeminent networking company in the world, but we're hoping it's one of many potential relationships," said ActiveVideo president and CEO Jeff Miller.
He said it was too early to discuss go-to-market strategies with Cisco: "Right now, what we've got is a demo here at IBC," Miller noted.
The companies said they expect the combination of ActiveVideo's platform and Cisco CDS to let cable and telco TV operators introduce interactive applications to digital set-top boxes, CI+ connected televisions and IP-connected devices.
Also at IBC, ActiveVideo is showing off a 3DTV user interface, which the company claims can be delivered to any existing set-top box or Internet-connected device.
ActiveVideo's customers include Cablevision Systems and Time Warner Cable's Oceanic division in Hawaii. Cablevision, for one, has discussed a plan to deliver TV programming over Wi-Fi connections to devices such as iPads in subscribers' homes.
Separately, Cisco last month acquired ExtendMedia, which sells an online video management system.
