  • Network Broadcast and SMT foresee the sale of a million STBs in Latin America

Sven Willig, General Manager Core Operation Platform of SMT, strategic partner of the Argentine integrator Network Broadcast in Latin America, told NexTV Latam that by 2011 end, they foresee the sale of a million STBs. In order to fulfill such objective, "tailor-made products for any client, both for bigger operators and small and medium size ones, will be developed". In 2010, three important operations of Brazil, Chile and Mexico concentrated greater sale volume by reaching a total of 350,000 devices.

Network Broadcast and SMT have worked together since four years ago. Currently, they are present in more than 50 Pay-TV operations in the region. "Clients have very ambitious projections for next year", Willig stated. And "Network Broadcast enables us to enter any operator of the whole region, which enables us to have this sales objective". Additionally, the idea is to offer them "a wide range of products so that they know in which quarter or year they need to migrate to another solution or add a new service. This strategy provides sales continuity along the time".

SMT devices, commercialized exclusively by the Argentine company, bear several CAS providers, though both Willig and Javier Lorenzo, Commercial Director of Network Broadcast, suggest to work with Comvenient, "because at present it is the safest system in the market and the most competitive for the region".

According to Willig, in general, technology in Latin America "is focused on MPEG2 SD but HD and MPE G4 migration is being noticed. That is the reason why we are focused on bringing products that generate added value already developed in SMT". The greatest sales volumes recorded in 2010 accounted for "HD MPEG 4 products in Chile, MPEG 4 SD in Brazil and MPEG 2 in Mexico".

In the Middle East and Asia, SMT "leads STB production for free-to-air DTT", and works with DVB, ATSC and ISDB-T. The Japanese standard was chosen by Argentina. However, Lorenzo pointed out that so far the company "has not closed any agreement with the Government of such country for the sale of STBs". At present, the Government is distributing free STB among low income sectors. To such ends, foreign and local companies' devices have been acquired.
