DirecTV reached 8,18 million subscribers in Latin America
In 3Q2010, DirecTV Latin America added 206,000 net subscribers, which accounted for a 27% growth as compared with the previous year. Therefore, the DTH operator recorded 8,18 million subscribers in the whole region. In the first nine months of 2010, the company added 842,000 users, almost twice as much as compared to the same period in 2009. Earnings in the region increased a 22%, that is, USD 930 millions, as compared with the USD 761 millions recorded in September, 2009.
The 8,18 million subscribers recorded in Latin America include Sky Mexico's clients (2,75 million users), though in the rest of the balance sheet data of such operator has not been included. As of 2Q10 closing, the company had recorded 7,7 million subscribers.
The number of clients added over 3Q10 accounts for about a 50% lower figure than that recorded in 2Q10, period in which, given the Soccer World Cup, the operator had tripled its net additions by recording 415 subscribers. According to the 3Q report, disconnection rate recorded a 2% increase (as compared with the 1.63% recorded in June). Such increase was mostly given by pre-paid clients as a result of the Soccer Cup end in July.
According to the report, gross subscriber additions grew a 36%, thus reaching 525,000 subscribers, which resulted from the steady HD, DVR and pre-paid service demand, and promotions targeted to the medium segment of the market. In this sense, the greatest growth was recorded mainly in Brazil, Argentina and Ecuador. In Latin America, DirecTV owns the 74% of Sky Brazil, the 41% of Sky Mexico and the 100% of DirecTV PanAmericana.
