Chile renewed authorizations for DTT trials
The Chilean Government decided to extend experimental DTT broadcasting authorizations, which had already granted to channels and were to expire this month, over a year period. The measure, decreed by the Chilean president Sebasti?n Pi?era, ensures the continuity of available digital broadcastings until DTT legal framework is defined in Congress.
La Tercera newspaper informed that a year ago, the Telecommunications Sub Secretary granted 16 licenses to carry out DTT trials for a 6-month period, renewable over the same term. However, this period "has not been fully taken advantage of in virtue of established ends and it is useful and necessary to keep on with the development of the new digital technology, thus enhancing its scope and coverage", the presidential decree established.
From now on, channels such as the state-owned TVN and private channels like Channel 13 and Chilevisi?n, among others, will be able to extend such authorizations for up to five years, thus also enabling them to rely on some certainty to carry out investments and plan future business. Such licenses cannot have a commercial use and current operators can replicate their current analog broadcastings in such digital channels, as Channel 13 and TVN are already doing. Moreover, the decree specifies that "greater facilities for licensees who currently use band VHF, band UHF for digital broadcastings of TV radio broadcasting service are necessary".
As NexTV Latam had already released, in July this year, the Chilean Senator Soledad Alvear had submitted a bill aimed at extending the experimental broadcasting period until June 2011. At that time, the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications of Chile, Felipe Morandé, had supported the initiative recognizing the need of such period extension. Chile adopted the Japanese-Brazilian ISDB-T standard for its DTT deployment. At present, DTT broadcastings are carried out in the capital city of Santiago and Valpara?so.
