Heat & Knicks' Square affair first 3D NBA match
by Sean Williams on Oct 6, 2010
ESPN has turned up the Heat on its 3D sports coverage, by showing the first 3D National Basketball Association (NBA) match. The clash between the New York Knicks and Miami Heat, at Madison Square Garden on Dec 17th will be the first of eight regular season games broadcast in 3D during the 2010-11 term.
Venues in Denver, Orlando, Miami, Atlanta and Phoenix will also feature this season, owing to their ability to accommodate the equipment needed to record and broadcast in 3D. ESPN's embryonic 3D channel is available to 45 million US homes via DirecTV, Comcast and AT&T, though the number of homes with 3D-ready TV sets is dramatically smaller.
Steve Hellmuth, exec. vice president for operations and technology at the NBA, accepts that the style of capture will need to change if 3D can make the most of basketball. "There are things that you can see in 3D that you can’t see in 2D, and that mostly revolves around low-angle cameras that let you appreciate how fast the players are," Hellmuth said. "You have to stay low, and the ref might run in front of you."
