  • Android will outstrip Apple in connected TV

The Google Android OS has more legs than Apple’s iOS when it comes to going the long-term distance in the device game, a June 2010 survey of developers has revealed.

The main reason cited has been Android’s readiness to power emerging segments for developers, particularly in the TV space, respondents said.

The survey, conducted by Appcelerator and IDC found that 58.6% of respondents believe that Android has a better long-term outlook over iOS, which comes in at 34.9%. Beyond that top-level stat lies the more interesting data: a full 72% of developers say Android “is best positioned to power a large number and variety of connected devices in the future,” compared to 25% for iOS. In fact, when it comes to connected TVs and the TV platform space, 44% said they are “very interested” in developing for Google TV, edging Apple TV (40%) even though Google’s platform isn’t even commercial yet—that’s saying something.

Developers increasingly see TV as the new frontier. “Apps are poised to help remake the television viewing experience just as they have remade the mobile experience,” said Scott Ellison, vice president of mobile and wireless at IDC. “Television needs new and more effective ways to create immersive experiences, engage audiences with advertisers, integrate social networks and drive viewership of original broadcasts.”

He added, “The television players who most effectively integrate app developers into their connected TV strategies are poised to potentially remake the television experience as we know it.”

The researchers also noted that when it comes to the intersection of mobility and TV—the tablet space—Android has a lot of fans. With 62% of developers expressing strong interest in Android tablets close to launch, it’s edging the iPad at an analogous point in time (last January 58% developers were strongly interested in iPad).

For now, though, Apple iOS continues to dominate in all categories relating to market/revenue opportunity and current devices. iPhone continues to lead overall developer sentiment with 91% saying they are “very interested” in developing for the device, compared to 82% for Android phones. And, developers feel Apple has a strong foothold in advertising going forward, however, with its iAd platform garnering the preference of 52% of developers surveyed, as opposed to AdMob (36%). Developers noted iAd’s richer ad units and higher click-through rates as the reason.
