Tanzanian journalists working with electronic media have been asked to prepare programmes which teach the public instead of concentrating on comedies. The Parastatal pensions Fund (PPF) manager in Eastern Zone, Jerome Ng’ityu, said last week that comedies were important but they don’t have tangible benefit in pushing the development agenda of the country.
He was closing a 14 days training on preparation of radio and television documentaries which was sponsored by the Tanzania Media Fund TMF and School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) of the University of Dar es Salaam. Mr Ng’itu told the participants of then training that many radio and television stations have been concentrating in drama, comedies and other programmes which do not impart knowledge to majority of Tanzanians.
“Radio and television are very important medium of communication. They have a crucial role to play in the implementation national development strategies,” he insisted. He said many electronic media outlets lack competent personnel to prepare informative and educative documentaries and they have been citing shortage of funds as their reason not to prepare the programmes. But, he noted, this should not be used as an excuse as media, as fourth estate, has important obligation to fulfil to the community is serves. “It is true that documentaries need knowledgeable people and a lot of research. You need to interview a lot of people while adhering to the tenets of journalism,” he said.
The coordinator of the training, Mr Ernest Mrutu, said until now they have managed to train about 80 journalists from Mbeya, Iringa, Rukwa, Coast, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Mtwara, Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Morogoro. Mr Mrutu said the training aim at empowering journalists working for electronic media to prepare informative and educative programmes which would benefit majority of Tanzanians.
