Russia Today launches new multimedia portal

The Russian news channel Russia Today (RT), which broadcasts in English, Arabic and Spanish, is launching a new multimedia internet portal at rt.com, the channel’s press service announced on Monday [15 November].
“Our website is the most popular foreign-language resource originating in Russia. More than 50 per cent of the people who visit rt.com live in the US, Canada and Great Britain. RT’s new portal will become one of the main sources of information for people who are interested in obtaining as objective a picture as possible about events around the world and who, as well as news, would like to find out more about Russia, its culture and history,” the statement quotes RT’s editor in chief, Margarita Simonyan, as saying.
The launch of RT’s new internet portal will be the next step towards the RT website becoming the main portal on Russia for foreigners, where they will be able to find the answer to any question, ranging from traditional Russian cooking recipes to detailed instructions on obtaining a Russian visa, the channel notes. A special “Everything about Russia” section contains a constantly updated encyclopaedia, Russiapedia, where people can obtain information on Russia’s history and geography, as well as its most famous politicians and figures from the world of culture and art. For people who appreciate literature, the website will contain a library of classic Russian literature translated into English and Arabic.
The new portal will devote a great deal of attention to practical sections, where visitors can plan their visit to Russia and book a hotel, as well as start to learn Russian with the help of RT’s special video courses, “Learn Russian”. Meanwhile, the RT website’s new English-language social networking service, Meet Friends, contains a range of functions to aid communication and allows people to make acquaintances and find friends the world over.
For media professionals, the rt.com portal has an internet video agency, FreeVideo, where they can obtain free access to a database of broadcast-quality video material about Russia. More than 2,500 television channels and news agencies from 156 countries use this resource, including ABC News (US), Al Arabiya (UAE), Channel 4 News (Great Britain), CNN (US), BBC (Great Britain), Fox News (US), NHK (Japan), NBC News (US) and TF1 (France).
Aside from information for foreign audiences, the website has a Russian-language section - InoTV. The website carries out daily monitoring of more than 100 television channels from around the world, and their reports on Russia are posted to the InoTV section with a translation into Russian. In addition, the website also publishes reports from the RT television channel.
All the sections of the website are interactive, and users may leave comments and post links to news from RT in Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites. Aside from the news sections, where people can watch the television channel live and read international and Russian news, the website provides unique content in the form of analysis, presenters’ blogs, photo reports and interactive 3D tours around RT’s studios.
