VTR offers Pay-TV channels through Internet in Chile
As from this Monday on, the Chilean cable TV operator VTR starts the commercialization of a new service that will enable its clients to have Internet access from their PCs or cell phones, to some of their Pay-TV channels at no additional cost. At least a 6 Mbps connection is recommended for an ideal performance.
According to several local media, the new service will operate through a specially created portal, which will require both a user's name and password. Therefore, the company is trying to strengthen the relationship with its new clients. "In a world where there is absolute convergence and interactivity, we want our Pay-TV to be consumed by users though the device they choose, from wherever they choose", stated VTR executive president, Mauricio Ramos.
The executive pointed out that the fiber network deployed by VTR enables 10, 20 and 30 Mbps Internet access, so, "whoever is longing for a premium experience, will migrate to higher speeds". "The 80% of new clients are buying 15-to-30 mbps high speed packages. And with the old ones, conversion happens really fast", he added.
Another Latin American operator that is also betting on content distribution through Internet is Cablevisi?n Argentina, which has closed an agreement with the premium channel Moviecity to broadcast about 100 movies of such channel through an Internet website, which has not been launched yet. In this case, the service will not be available for all of the operator's subscribers, such as VTR, but only for the one receiving the Premium service.
VTR is the main pay-TV operator in Chile. According to information disclosed by the Subsecretary of Telecommunications of such country, as of 1st semester closing, the company recorded 895,000 subscribers. As of June, there 1,82 million Pay-TV users were recorded in the country. VTR competes with Telef?nica, Claro, DirecTV, TuVes HD and Pacifico Cable, among others.
