BBC One will made the historic shift to high definition this evening, starting with Jason Manford and Alex Jones on The One Show in pin-sharp detail.
The high definition simulcast of BBC One will go live tonight on Freesat channel 108, Freeview channel 50, Sky channel 143 and Virgin Media channel 108.
Starting at 7pm, the channel's launch night will feature a series of shows produced in native HD, starting with The One Show and new series Wallace and Gromit: World of Inventions.
Later, BBC One HD will air HD versions of Nigel Slater's Simple Suppers, Jimmy's Food Factory, The Apprentice and Film 2010.
Any programmes not produced in native HD will be still be shown on the channel, but upscaled to the higher picture quality.
Also from tonight, the existing BBC HD channel will move to Freesat channel 109, Freeview channel 54, Sky channel 169 and Virgin Media channel 187.
"The arrival of the UK's favourite channel in HD - as a second HD channel from the BBC - will increase the range and choice of HD programming we can offer the ever growing HD audience," said Danielle Nagler, the BBC's head of HD & 3D.
"The existing BBC HD channel has been hugely successful. It will continue to show programmes from across all BBC channels, to allow all HD viewers to find programming they can enjoy. And it will now have space to accommodate more hours of new HD programmes from the BBC."
The BBC's flagship soap opera EastEnders will commence broadcasting in HD for the first time on Christmas Day.
The corporation hopes that the vast majority of BBC One content will be available in native HD by 2012, including all news and current affairs output.
