Sarkozy may offer support to French football
French president Nicolas Sarkozy may look to provide support to French football by imposing some kind of minimum price guarantee for the next set of French Football League (LFP) rights following the withdrawal of Canal Plus’s competitor Orange from the market, according to local reports.
While Sarkozy cannot impose a minimum price directly, he may look to obtain a guarantee of between €550-600 million a year for the rights, against the €465 million currently paid by Canal Plus for the rights it holds, by mandating an obligation to support French football on the model of the current support that French broadcasters have to provide for the country’s cinema industry, according to the reports.
