Eutelsat Ka-Sat will be launched into space in December
This is a high-performance satellite, which will take up to 80 transponders and will allow the satellite Internet faster and cheaper from next year
Eutelsat Ka-Sat will be launched into space by a Russian Proton rocket and placed in orbital position of 9 degrees East, which now occupies the Eurobird 9A, also managed by Eutelsat.
"About 13 million households in Europe currently have fast Internet access through traditional terrestrial technology," said the head of Eutelsat, Jean-François Fremaux, project manager at the launch of the satellite in Toulouse.
The satellite, built by Astrium space division of European manufacturer EADS, is the first in Europe to work with so-called Ka-band frequencies.
These would allow Internet users to download at speeds of 10 megabytes per second and upload to the network up to four megabytes per second. "It's one of the most complex and large satellites we have built," said the manager responsible for Astrium, Aziz Bouhier.
The total project cost of 350 million euros (about $ 486 million).
