Maldives: MBC takes government to court over assets

Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) today filed a lawsuit in Civil Court against the Finance Ministry to procure assets, money, and employees of Television Maldives (TVM) and Voice of Maldives (VOM), now rebranded to MNBC One and Raajje Radio. In a news conference this afternoon, Chairperson Ibrahim Umar Manik said the company took the matter to court as it did not have any other choice.
Former Communications Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel of Raajje Chambers said the constitution promises that state media should be delivered to the public fairly. “We regret to take this government to court every time because the citizens are not getting that fundamental right,” he said.
Dr Jameel noted that the lawsuit seeks a court order declaring that using assets and resources of state media channels by a government company is illegal, and another order commanding Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC) to handover the assets of the channels.
Chairperson Umar Manik stressed that rebranding the channels do not change the ownership. The government is not providing the salaries of Directors Board members passed by the parliamentary Finance Committee, he added. He further said that Raajje Chambers headed by former Special Advisor to the President Dr Hassan Saeed, and Dr Jameel is prosecuting on behalf of the company free of charge.
The government refused to handover the assets, employees, and land of state media channels, saying that they will remain under Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC) which was established under a presidential decree.
The government decided not to dissolve MNBC after the parliament rejected MNBC Chairman Mohamed ‘Madulu’ Waheed and Managing Director Ibrahim Khaleel while endorsing nine people for MBC’s Directors Board.
