Sri Lanka permits BBC to cover hearings
Monday, November 15 2010, 12:53 GMT
By Andrew Laughlin,
The Sri Lankan government has reportedly informed the BBC that it can have full access to cover proceedings of the government-appointed war commission.
The commission will investigate the final years of the decades-long civil war between the government and Tamil separatists, which centred mainly in the north of the island.
Last Wednesday, the country's defence minister banned the corporation from travelling to cover the hearings in Jaffna, the main city in northern Sri Lanka.
The government has steadfastly blocked the BBC from reporting the testimonies of Tamil civilians before the seven-strong panel.
In recent months, the BBC and other journalists has also been barred from reporting from the large refugee camps situated in the north of Sri Lanka.
However, the office of the Sri Lankan president informed the BBC on Saturday that it was free to report on the commission proceedings wherever they take place, reports BBC News.
Despite allowing the BBC to cover the hearings, it's unclear whether more general media access will now be granted in northern Sri Lanka, which is still heavily militarised.
