  • New# DTT channels will be bided in Argentina in March

The leader of the Argentine Federal Audiovisual Communication Services Authority, Gabriel Mariotto, stated that in March a bid aimed at granting new DTT channels will be opened. According to the executive, the available spectrum will be divided in 33% for private, another 33% for non profit organizations and the remaining percentage for the State, which has already assigned frequencies 22, 23, 24 and 25 in UHF. The last time that a free-to-air TV channel was bided in such country was in 1968. Mariotto pointed out that "the board signed the digital mirror" so that current private channels 2, 9, 11, and 13 broadcast under such technology, "through which they will join DTT".

In an interview with Diagonales newspaper, Mariottto pointed out that the agency had recently carried out a census with the purpose of obtaining a radio electrical spectrum outlook in virtue of a technical plan. "There, 15,000 new radio and TV experiences were recorded". On the other hand, he stated that digitalization "will enable the recovery of channels so that many players will be able to broadcast". "The new Audiovisual Communication Services Law enables technology to reach everybody".

At present, the State is deploying a national network aimed at taking DTT across the whole country, coverage to be also complemented via satellite. So far the following channels are broadcasted in that platform: Canal 7, Encuentro, Paka Paka, C5N, CN23, GolTV and Telesur. INCAATV, the channel of the Argentine Cinema Institute, will soon de added. A couple of months ago, the Government authorized by decree Radio y Televisi?n Argentina (RTA) to promote that platform, temporarily, "own or third parties'" channels in the four assigned frequencies. Therefore, free-to-air private channels were opened such possibility though they have not joined the public proposal.

The Government has recently inaugurated broadcasting towers in La Plata, Ca?uelas, Luj?n and Baradero, in Buenos Aires province, and in Resistencia, in Chaco province, which join the already set up in Buenos Aires.

The Audiovisual Communication Services Law has been recently regulated after being stand-by for several months, due to different judicial suits against it. In fact, the currently suspended Article 161, which establishes that holders exceeding the authorized number of licenses must disinvest within a term no longer than a year. This would force Clar?n to get rid of its free-to-air TV channel (channel 13) or the MSO Cablevisi?n. The Supreme Court has recently ratified the suspension of such article after rejecting the appeal submitted by the Argentine Government
