Brazil offers USD 60 millions so that Uruguay adopts ISDB-T
The Brazilian Government presented a series of investments aimed at different tasks, such as digital TV, which would amount to USD 60 millions, before a group of Uruguayan representatives. The idea is that this initiative, together with Japan's previous proposals, ends up convincing the Uruguayan Government to replace DVB with ISDB-T. Projects would be presented in Uruguay next November 5th. The final decision would be taken before year end.
According to Convergencia Digital site, the meeting was held in the headquarters of the Development Bank of Brazil. Brazilian companies from eight industries presented their projects, which will be partially financed by the aforementioned bank. The proposal includes joint ventures with Uruguayan companies. As for DTT, such investments include the production of STBs and antennas. It is a "great offer, not only for digital TV but also for the productive development of both countries", stated Andrés Barbosa, Casa Civil do Brasil advisor.
Since Uruguay adopted DVB, four years ago, "Europeans have done absolutely nothing, they made promises and have not fulfilled them. This also happened in the rest of the world because they are in crisis", Barbosa pointed out.
In face of Japan's interest and the possibilities of a change, the European offered a USD 3,93 million economic support increase to be added to its USD 904,000 initial contribution aimed at the acquisition of equipment and personnel training. However, the Uruguayan Government suggested the need to receive greater investments in several opportunities.
