SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2010: Harmonic Lights Up Full-Band Optical Transmitter
SupraLink Universal DWDM Transmitter Supports Full Range of HFC Transmission
Todd Spangler --
Harmonic launched the SupraLink Universal Transmitter, a 1550-nanometer dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) solution that can cover the entire RF spectrum.
With the 16-wavelength transmitter, MSOs can avoid having to pull new fiber to support additional segmentation and commercial services applications. According to Harmonic, in a typical installation, SupraLink can be as low as one-tenth of the cost of alternative solutions that require new fiber.
The real breakthrough is that the SupraLink provides a reach of up to 70 kilometers but is one-fourth the cost of typical 1550 DWDM transmitters, Gil Katz, Harmonic's senior director of cable solutions and strategy. The product is comparable in cost to 1310-nanometer systems thanks to its optimized direct-modulated DWDM technology.
"The new Harmonic SupraLink Universal Transmitter is a ‘one-stop shop' transmitter for cable operators, a solution uniquely able to support virtually all HFC architectures," Katz said.
This dense solution is used with Harmonic's existing HFC platform and is compatible with existing deployed nodes. The SupraLink Universal Transmitter can also be used in conjunction with an outdoor hub and is able to support RF over glass (RFoG) deployments.
Earlier this week, Aurora Networks introduced a line of full-spectrum DWDM transmitters, available in two versions: one optimized for carrying a full analog lineup up to 550 MHz and the other for a "light" analog lineup of 30 or so.
