Akamai has released its latest State of the Internet report for the second quarter of 2010.
Unsurprisingly, South Korea remains king of connection speeds worldwide. The country has an average broadband connection speed of a staggering 17Mbps, which is up 47% year-on-year.
That compares to the UK’s average of 3.9Mbps, and a global average of 1.8Mbps. Hong Kong was in second place with 8.6Mbps, and Japan third with 8Mbps, but still way behind the leader of the pack.
So it isn’t surprising that the fastest city in the world was a South Korean one, Masan, which tips the scales at over 20Mbps and is the only city in the world to do so.
Akamai also examined the issue of mobile connectivity, discovering that speeds had improved overall, with users on 95 of the studied 109 mobile providers experiencing faster connections than last quarter. Interestingly, Slovakia had both the fastest and slowest mobile ISP, with averages of 6.1Mbps and 115Kbps respectively.
When it came to attack traffic sources, the US was top, accounting for 11% of global attacks. China and Russia were just behind, representing 20% between them, so these three countries together make up almost a third of the world’s attack sources
