Claro is already offering DTH in Panama
According to La Prensa newspaper, Claro Panama, América M?vil's subsidiary, started to offer DTH in such country in August and has already recorded 4,000 clients. Additionally, Antonio Garc?a, commercial manager of the company, pointed out that the new service had not been promoted yet because they needed to ensure the channel quality first. Panama is the only Central American country where the company does not have fixed telephony operations.
In Central America, the company offers DTH in Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Since February 2010 Intelsat 1R satellite, positioned on 50° West in place of Intelsat 705, has been utilized. However, in Puerto Rico, the company has an independent platform with its own headend and capacity in SES World Skies' satellite AMC-21. This year, the operator also requested frequency to start offering satellite pay-TV services in Costa Rica.
In March 2010, Panama's National Public Services Authority granted Claro authorization to offer DTH services. The license is valid for 25 years and can be extended over additional and consecutive 25-year terms each one, as long as requirements and obligations set by the regulating authority are met. According to data recorded by the aforementioned authority as of August, 19 companies had licenses to offer pay-TV in such country. The market is dominated by three big operators: Cable Onda, el DTH Sky y Cable & Wireless.
