  • Following on the successful launch and live demonstration of the company's innovative strand-mounted small cell base station in August, 2010, BelAir Networks has announced that the award-winning BelAir100SP Strand Picocell now supports CDMA2000.

The CDMA2000 radio option will allow a wider range of mobile carriers to deploy the BelAir100SP to improve mobile broadband service to their subscribers while offloading data from both their radio access and mobile core networks.

The BelAir100SP is a small cell base station that leverages available broadband IP infrastructure to deliver mobile broadband coverage via both licensed and unlicensed wireless spectrum. The BelAir100SP can be deployed from aerial strand, and in pedestals, cabinets or vaults to augment or extend existing mobile broadband coverage.

"Traditional tower and rooftop deployments yield macrocell coverage but the BelAir100SP addresses the explosion in data traffic by delivering targeted, high capacity small cell coverage where the macrocell either doesn't reach or is overtaxed," said Stephen Rayment, Chief Technology Officer, BelAir Networks. "Based on demand from leading mobile carriers and cable operators, we first introduced the BelAir100SP with GSM and Wi-Fi but the CDMA2000 variant was not far behind. Carriers are keen to leverage a cost effective small cell architecture that will address their current networking challenges while providing a smooth evolution to LTE."

The BelAir100SP will be featured in booth # 623 at 4G World 2010, McCormick Place, Chicago, IL and in booth # 951 at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, LA.

The modular design of the BelAir100SP currently supports a range of licensed 3G radios, with a migration to LTE, along with dual 802.11n Wi-Fi radios. The BelAir100SP includes a DOCSIS® 3.0 modem, plant power supply, and power protection/splitter, enabling it to integrate directly with hybrid fibre coax (HFC) infrastructure for power and backhaul. HFC is the all IP networking infrastructure deployed by cable operators. Many mobile carriers already partner, or share common ownership with, cable operators and leverage their HFC networks to backhaul mobile traffic from 2G and 3G macrocells. The BelAir100SP extends this mutually beneficial networking relationship to enable small cell deployments that enhance the capacity of 3G and LTE macrocell coverage.

The BelAir100SP combines BelAir Networks proven robust, compact hardware with their industry-leading BelAirOS operating system software and BelView NMS network management, now scaling to manage 50,000 base stations in a single network.
