CNT from Ecuador might add 500,000 subscribers within five years
Media Networks Latin America (Telef?nica), DTH infraestructure provider for Corporaci?n Nacional de Telecomunicaciones of Ecuador's (CNT) new Pay-TV service, is getting ready to enter the platform with about 500,000 subscribers within the next five years, though the Ecuadorian operator's forecasts are much lower. In addition to CNT, Media Networks has already launched its whole sale service with Oi and CTBC in Brazil and has moved forward in negotiations with Mexican, Central American and South American telecommunications operators with the purpose of providing them the system.
Mexico and Colombia seem to be the markets with more chanes due to the fact that telecommunications operators are willing to complete their offers in order to compete in triple play. In Mexico, Axtel does not have any TV offer, and in Colombia there are the incumbent ETB and Emcali. "We cannot provide any information about who we are negotiating with", Telef?nica Media Networks Commercial and Marketing Director Luis Delamer told NexTV Latam. However, he recognized that they were holding conversations with companies that do not belong to Telef?nica Group in all markets. Additionally, he pointed out that "there are over 10 potential clients from Mexico to Chile".
Four of the fibe incumbent fixed telecommunications companies of Telef?nica (Chile, Brazil, Colombia and Peru) have already launched their DTH service. Argentina, where it is banned by law, is the only remaining country. Movistar (mobile operator) has also launched it in Venezuela. Telef?nica has presence with Movistar in Mexico and Central America, but, according to Delamer, "it is difficult to launch the service in those places where Movistar has operations".
Delamer pointed out that CNT's purchase of DTH STBs will be carried out by the state-owned Ecuadorian company. Devices shall be compatible with Nagra's CAS utilized by Media Networks. As for content, he stated that channels not included in the package can be hired by CNT; as for example, Ecuadorian local channels.
Media Networks has almost 400 channels in more than 25 transponders distributed in several feeds, with more than 15 HD channels. The company forecasts over a 50% grwoth in the following two years.
