  • Oi turns to its IPTV project again

The Brazilian DTH Oi will return to its IPTV project by means of which the company is planning to offer advanced services such as VOD, HD and 3D to higher income clients. According to Pedro Ripper, Oi Strategy and Technological Development Director, to such ends, the company will soon rely on a hybrid IP STB. The decision of turning to IPTV is framed within a new strategy of the company, which also includes CATV offer in certain zones and the expansion of its DTH all across the country in 2011.

Therefore, the operator regains its positioning in the Pay-TV market, after having interrupted its commercial activity in the last year. Ripper pointed out that together with the IPTV project, the company is planning to request cable TV licenses, once the National Telecommunications Agency restarts such process. However, the company will not widen the number of licenses for all the cities in which it operates. But the idea would be to request authorization only in those areas "of more sophisticated services demand".

According to Teletime, Oi would bet on fiber to compete with Net - the main cable operator of Brazil and Latin America - in those places where the operator does not have HFC networks. The telecommunications company GVT, which has forecasted its Pay-TV offer launching for the first semester 2011, is planning to utilize the hybrid DTH/IPTV strategy. In addition, Telef?nica, which also offers satellite TV, relaunched its FTTH video service jointly with the operator TVA.

In addition to hybrid STBs, Oi would also offer devices with band C reception channels and the band Ku channel, which is already offered via Embratel. Likewise, the company is planning STBs fitted with HD free-to-air digital TV channel reception, following steps already taken by Sky.

Finally, Ripper highlighted that his company is betting on the soon approval of Bill 116 (former Bill 29), that enables telephone companies to enter the IPTV market, eliminates foreign capital restrictions in cable TV and sets a quota policy for national content broadcasting. In 2008, the company had announced its intentions to render IPTV services unsuccessfully. Its DTH coverage has been recently widened over new Brazilian states. Additionally, the service will be commercialized in the whole country in the first semester 2011.
