Foxtel intros On Demand service for iQ2 users

Australian pay-TV operator Foxtel has unveiled its Foxtel On Demand service for users of the HD-capable iQ2 set-top box, available once they connect their unit to the Internet and receive a software update.
The new service is accessible via the existing on-screen TV guide, and provides Foxtel subscribers with access to over 1,000 TV episodes and hundreds of movies to watch instantly. From today (October 1st), all Foxtel iQ2 set-top boxes will start receiving the software update.
“Foxtel has been investing in its technology to build on the suite of services available to our subscribers and with the launch of On Demand, Foxtel has moved to the internet and completed its offering which includes HD, 3D and Internet TV to become the home of entertainment," said Kim Williams, CEO of the pay-TV operator. “This is the perfect time for Foxtel to launch its On Demand Internet TV service as broadband is available at faster speeds, and Internet plans are becoming more affordable."
The number of titles available on the service is expected to be increased to over 5,000 movies and TV episodes by 2011. Hit TV series available on Foxtel On Demand at launch include Mad Men, Jersey Shore, Australia's Next Top Model, The Hills, Ice Road Truckers, Summer Heights High, Spirited, and Life After People Special; while movies available on the service at launch include Toy Story, ET, Finding Nemo, American Pie, Twilight, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Renting TV episodes costs AUD 2.95 (US$ 2.85) each, with some children's programming available at AUD 1.95 per episode, while rental of library movies costs AUD 3.95 each, and new release movies cost AUD 5.50 in standard-definition and AUD 5.95 in high-definition.
Telstta BigPond customers also have unmetered access to the service. Foxtel reportedly plans to roll out the service to selected Foxtel iQ set-top boxes from December this year.
