Toshiba recently announced they’re currently developing a 3D TV that won’t require the users to wear custom glasses. As soon as Toshiba’s steam started picking up, Sony was quick to launch their counter offer by announcing yesterday they too are developing 3D TV’s with no glasses required. The 3D glasses have been a burden to couch potatoes since they cost $130 – $250 a piece. The glasses are battery powered, fragile, ugly, and annoying to wear. Conventional 3D TV’s had mixed reviews from consumers and some even passed up on it because they refuse to wear the 3D Glasses.

Sony Vice President Yoshihisa Ishida told the press: “Seeing 3D without glasses is more convenient.” It will definitely do consumers a favor if they can somehow pull this off, but how does the 3D TV with no glasses work? According to Yomiuri Shimbun Toshiba’s Glass free 3D TV technology have an integral imaging system that emits rays of light at different angles, allowing viewers’ brains to recreate 3-D images without special glasses. The new technology also will enable viewers to enjoy 3-D content from numerous viewing positions, and the images will not strain the eyes, the sources said.

There has been no official announcement from Toshiba when they plan to release this new technology but some reports indicate they might be available as soon as this holiday season itself. Meanwhile, Sony is still considering the price involved in developing this technology before they start to offer it in the market. Current models of 3D LED TV’s are sold at around $1,500 – $4,000. Reports indicate the price of a 3D TV with no glasses required hovers around $1,500 and up.
