  • Govt finds SS Music too hot, imposes ban for 7 days

    (17 November 2010 7:50 pm)

NEW DELHI: The government has found SS Music channel too hot and banned it for seven days for allegedly showing nudity.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has prohibited the transmission or re-transmission of SS Music, a multi-lingual music channel, on any platform throughout India with effect from midnight on 22 November till midnight on 29 November.

The Ministry said it had been noticed that the channel had telecast a programme containing songs under the title ‘Sizzling Hits’ on 25 March and on 10 April this year “which appeared against good taste and decency”. The visuals shown during these programmes appeared obscene and vulgar. The visuals also appeared to denigrate women and were “not suitable for unrestricted public exhibition”.

A show cause notice was issued on 13 May as the telecast appeared to violate Rule 6 (1) (a), (d), (k) & (o) of the Programme Code prescribed under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 and rules framed thereunder.

The channel in reply on 28 May submitted that there was nothing in these visuals that can be described as obscene and vulgar and also that these programmes did not denigrate women. The channel did not request for any personal hearing to advocate their case further.

The Ministry gave another opportunity to the channel to explain their case by granting them a personal hearing on 22 June where the offending clips were shown to the channel representative, who admitted that the content was obscene and vulgar but denied that the channel had telecast those songs.

He was informed that the clips provided by the Electronic Media Monitoring Centre of this Ministry were recorded along with the date and time through an automated system. A CD of these programmes provided by the channel also contained the objectionable content.

The Inter Ministerial Committee (IMC) in its meeting held on 15 November previewed the recording and observed that by telecasting such visuals the channel had violated clauses 6(1)(a),(d),(k) and (o) of the Programme Code.

The Ministry accepted the recommendations of the IMC to prohibit the channel for a week.
