Telef?nica was granted DTH license in Mexico
According to Milenio newspaper, the Grupo Telecomunicaciones Mexicanas, Telef?nica Movistar's affiliate in such country, was granted license to operate a public telecommunications network at a national scale, by means of which the company will offer Pay-TV services and satellite data broadcasting. Telef?nica is already offering DTH services in other countries as direct operator or whole sale provider, thus the possibility to operate under any of such modalities.
The Mexican affiliate of the Spanish company assured that such grating was too recent, therefore, they were about to start a business plan analysis with the purpose of learning about such network exploitation feasibility. If DTH were launched as direct operator, the model would be similar to that of Venezuela, where Telef?nica offers the services through its brand Movistar, but it is not an incumbent telephony operator.
The Spanish company offers its whole sale service through Media Networks, a company with headquarters in Peru. The Brazilian Oi and CTBC are some of the companies utilizing such solution. It has also been assigned by the Ecuadorian National Telecommunications Commission.
According to information disclosed by the Federal Telecommunications Commission, in June 2010, satellite TV recorded 3,51 million subscribers, which accounted for a 98.4% growth as compared to the same period in 2009. Sky is the main DTH operator, which as of 3Q2010 recorded 2,75 million users. The other one is Dish, which since its launching has recorded record growth rates.
