Moldovan cableco looks to the future
ACC CONVENTION – BUCHAREST. Moldova’s leading cable operator Sun Communications has revealed its plans for 2011.
Speaking exclusively to Broadband TV News, Serghei Lavrinenco, the company’s programming director, said that they include the rollout of digital TV services to Belts, the country’s second city, and the introduction of DOCSIS 3.0 internet access on its networks.
Sun Communications was established in 1993 and is currently owned by four individuals and the EBRD. A triple play company, it has 100,000 subscribers, of whom 7,000-10,000 receive digital TV services.
However, its digital TV subscribers are at present confined to the capital, Chisinau. Sun Communications’ analogue/digital offer consists of up to 130 channels in four general plus two thematic packages and costs from €1.70 to €9 a month including VAT.
Although there are some 150 cable networks in Moldova, it is by far the largest, with its only real competitors in the sector being Satelit TV and Alpha.
Moldova also has a DTH platform named Focus Sat Moldova, which contrary to what its name might suggest is not owned by UPC, and has just introduced IPTV this year, with a service operated by the incumbent telco Moldtelecom.
