Nine Networks plans 3D channel for London Olympics
by Jason Saundalkar on Mar 25, 2012
Australian commercial television network, Nine Network, is planning to launch a standalone 3D channel for the forthcoming London Olympics.
The network will forge ahead with its plans subject to approval from the Australian Communications and Media Authority and Communications Minister Stephen Conroy.
The authorisation would require the watchdog as well as the Minister to grant Nine Network additional spectrum.
A highlights package is deemed likely between 11am and 4pm local time but if no additional spectrum is allocated, the service would feature as channel 41 on the electronic programme guide, with coverage on one of Nine’s existing multi-channels, GO or GEM.
Since the launch of 3D TV in Australia back in 2010, more than 100,000 3D television sets have been sold in the country.
Nine Network was launched on 16 September 1956 and presently broadcasts English language content via terrestrial, cable and satellite.
