Sites operated by BBC Scotland could face disruption because of the union's dispute with Mitie Security over a planned pay freeze.
Mitie Security are sub-contracted by Johnson Controls to provide security staff for BBC Scotland Sites such as the River City studios in Dumbarton and the Pacific Quay headquarters in Glasgow.
Union members are disputing Mitie's proposal for a pay freeze for the second year in succession. Last year, security staff reluctantly accepted a pay freeze after Mitie managers blamed Johnson Controls for squeezing their budgets.
Whilst BECTU has agreed pay rises for 2010/11 with a number of sub-contractors engaged by Johnson Controls across the BBC, Mitie has once again adopted a hard line and is refusing to meet with BECTU officials to discuss a rise for their staff.
Consultative ballot
Within the next few days, the union will open a consultative ballot amongst members to guage the extent of support for industrial action.
Paul McManus, BECTU's Scottish organiser, says that his members are "disillusioned and particularly angry at Mitie's refusal to engage in any dialogue over this."
"Security staff are often the first point of contact for anyone visiting a BBC site and Mitie, Johnson Controls and the BBC most of all, expects them to provide a friendly and professional service.
"We are disappointed that despite being aware of this problem, BBC managers have shown a complete disregard for these staff whom, laughingly, they like to refer to as part of the 'BBC Family'."
"If our members are forced, by Mitie's intransigence, to resort to strike action then BBC staff will face picket lines before Christmas.”
