BBC hires Channel 5 exec Kieran Clifton
BroadcastingThe BBC has reportedly appointed Channel 5 executive Kieran Clifton as the new head of strategy for its future media and technology (FM&T) division.
Clifton will officially join the BBC's digital media operation on November 1, after six years spent at Channel 5.
His most recent role at the broadcaster was head of strategy, while he previously sat on the shadow board of Project Canvas, the IPTV joint venture now known as YouView.
When he joins the BBC, Clifton will replace James Micklethwait, who is moving to head up strategy at BBC Journalism.
Clifton, who will take a seat on the FM&T group board, will be based at Broadcasting House rather than move to the new BBC North headquarters in Salford with his FM&T colleagues.
Channel 5 is currently in the process of cutting around 80 jobs, representing a quarter of its workforce, as part of its new owner Richard Desmond's major cost-cutting drive.
Meanwhile, FM&T has agreed a partnership with media job agency Vision+Media to launch a series of bespoke digital training opportunities in the north of England.
The three-month paid placements will be in the areas of software engineering and user experience, all conducted within the FM&T department.
"These bespoke placements are part of our commitment to training and developing the best local talent in the north," said BBC North director Peter Salmon.
Nick Gallon, FM&T technical manager for applications, added: "This is a fantastic opportunity for talented software engineers and UX designers to get a feel for what it is really like working within BBC FM&T - to sample the projects, the technologies and the methodologies we use, whilst showcasing their skills in a real environment not an anodyne interview."
