Optus to deliver pay-TV via NBN fibre network?
Australia's Communications Minister, Senator Stephen Conroy, has speculated that an agreement between telco Optus and the company behind Australia's upcoming fibre-based National Broadband Network could see the telco's cable TV services switched over to the fibre-based network.
The comments were made by Mr. Conroy during an appearance on ABC's Madonna King show, in answer to a listener's question regarding the impact of the NBN project on Optus services. If such a deal were to transpire between Optus and NBN Co., the telco's HFC network could be switched off as a result.
“We’re in discussions with Optus, as the National Broadband Network are, about the possibility of migrating broadband customers across to the NBN,” said Mr. Conroy. “There’ll be a commercial decision made […] what that could mean is when fibre comes and gets connected to your home those services are delivered through the fibre, rather than the HFC.”
NBN Co. is a a government-backed enterprise which aims to connected over 90% of Australian homes to an open Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network, with an initial investment of AUD 43bn (US$ 42.45bn) involved, delivering speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
