Dutch public broadcasting relatively inexpensive
October 15th,
Public broadcasting in the Netherlands costs a little over 50 euros per year for each citizen, based on the current budget for the next five years. Thus public radio and television in the Netherlands is relatively inexpensive compared to other European countries. Swiss public broadcasting, at almost 140 euros per person per year, is the most expensive in Europe. The Spanish pay the least per person - less than 28 euros annually.
The total cost of Dutch public broadcasting to the taxpayer is 798 million euros. The broadcasters contribute an additional 40 million from advertising income, so the budget in 2011 is 838 million euros. For radio 90 million euros have been allocated. Internet gets 25 million, the digital theme channels 17 million, and the organization of Dutch Public Broadcasting (NPO) 132 million. The bulk of the budget, 525 million euros, goes to television.
The public broadcasters expect cuts, but details are not yet included in the budget of the new government that took office yesterday. The new government wants to save a total of 200 million euros on public broadcasting by 2015.
