Digital cable will reach 22 million subscribers in 2015
According to the second edition of "Digital CATV in Latin America, 2005-2015", developed by Dataxis NexTV Latam, in 2015 22 million Digital cable subscribers will be recorded in Latin America, a figure that would account for the 27% of the total Pay-TV subscribers base forecasted for such year. Therefore, digital cable is positioned as the future second main Pay-TV technology option in the region, after DTH. Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia would contribute the 77% of subscribers.
The report forecasts that by 2015 the 81.43% of Pay-TV subscribers will stem from digital variants. DTH rapid expansion would consolidate such trend and might exert certain pressure on cable systems to speed up digitalization beyond Premium segments. Carlos Blanco, Dataxis NexTV Latam Research Director and author of the report, pointed out that "digital cable popularization will serve as the base for the maturing of added value offers such as PPV, VOD; DVR, among others".
As of 2010 closing, 6,9 million digital CATV subscribers will be recorded in Latin America. Therefore, digital cable subscriber base will be multiplied almost 14 times since 2005. Digital cable booming in the region started when some of the main CATV systems of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico stepped in the market as integrated multiple services operators, joining the pioneers from Chile and Venezuela.
Additionally, the research analyzes that some of the main cable systems of the region have turned to digitalization via own systems; mainly Motorola's. Nevertheless, DVB like variants started to gain room, especially in Brazil. By 2015, it is expected that digital cable subscriber share will amount to a 75% for own variants and a 25% for DVB.
The report analyzes digital cable development perspectives in the region and includes historical information and forecasts of the Pay-TV market in 18 Latin American countries.
