Elan Closs Stephens joins BBC Trust

BroadcastingElan Closs Stephens, the former chairman of Welsh-language broadcaster S4C, has been appointed the new BBC Trustee for Wales.
Closs Stephens, who will officially start her four-year term at the BBC Trust on November 1, is currently professor of communications and the creative industries at the University of Wales at Aberystwyth. She is also a former governor of the British Film Institute.
Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt announced her appointment today, along with the reappointment of six trust members - Alison Hastings (member for England), Rotha Johnston (member for Northern Ireland) and general members Patricia Hodgson, David Liddiment, Diane Coyle and Mehmuda Mian.
Hunt said that Closs Stephens' "extensive experience" in television and the creative industries will be "invaluable in today's rapidly changing media landscape".
Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons added: "Elan will be a huge asset to the Trust, to the BBC and to licence fee payers in Wales. She has a wealth of experience in media and the creative industries and in providing strategic leadership to cultural bodies. I am very pleased to welcome her to the board."
Closs Stephens said that she was "delighted to have been given the opportunity to help get the best out of the BBC for the people of Wales".
"The BBC holds great public affection in Wales. It has helped strengthen Wales's national identity," she said.
"Over the years it has provided information, entertainment and analysis. It has also provided opportunities for economic growth. It will be my job as part of the Trust to support, maintain and grow the BBC's contribution to Wales."
Closs Stephens will replace the outgoing Janet Lewis-Jones, who will leave her post on October 31, along with Trust vice chair Chitra Bharucha.
However, DCMS has opted to delay the appointment of a new vice-chairman until a replacement can be found for Lyons, who has opted against applying for a second term as chairman.
