KBS board fails to agree on scope of licence fee increase
October 14th,
The public broadcaster KBS said its board of directors failed to agree on a new TV licence fee from viewers. The current monthly fee is 2,500 won ($2) per household.
According to the Korea Broadcasting System, its 11-member board of directors, seven of whom were appointed by recommendations from the ruling Grand National Party and four from the opposition parties, was scheduled to meet today to decide the scope of the rate hike, after the seven GNP-leaning directors had made a concession by cutting the rate hike demand from the previous 4,600 won to 4,000 won last night to demand a flexible advertisement ratio in KBS revenue.
However the other four directors, who demand the increase be limited at 3,500 won and retention of the current 60 percent advertisement ratio, did not show up, saying the other seven directors’ demand on the flexible ad ratio was unacceptable. The KBS had expected that the directors would reach an agreement between 3,500 won and 4,000 won.
