  • Film search website backs YouView

    Wednesday, October 13

Freeview BT Arqiva Digital TV Find Any Film, an on-demand movies search website backed by the UK Film Council, has confirmed its support for new IPTV platform YouView.

The site, which enables UK film fans to watch, buy, download and rent movies, sees YouView as the "first major opportunity to be on a mainstream TV platform and reach out directly to millions of TV viewers".

Backed by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva, YouView will aim to upgrade the Freeview platform to support video on-demand and internet services when it launches next year.

However, Ofcom is currently reviewing a number of complaints about YouView's proposition, before deciding whether to refer the venture for further investigation at the Competition Commission.

Martin Talks, director of Find Any Film and chief executive of its parent company Blue Barracuda, said that there has been lots of discussion about the convergence of television and web, but so far the "technology" has not truly emerged.

"Consumers have been using multiple devices while watching TV to message their friends, find out information on sites like FindAnyFilm.com and share the experience via social media," he said.

"Technology has failed to catch-up with consumer entertainment habits and we've ended up with a fragmented market. YouView is the first major opportunity for us to be on a TV platform and break down these barriers.

"We'd strongly urge Ofcom to look at the wider commercial benefits in its review and not close the door on the first real chance that we've got of reaching the TV screen. There is a need in the market for an open access service that will give viewers the freedom to explore and share new content."

Earlier in the week, video on-demand site Blinkbox also backed YouView to create a "single universal standard" for the delivery of online video in the UK.
