Italian telco Tiscali and Chinese vendor ZTE have signed a strategic partnership agreement under which the two companies will start deploying ultra-wide broadband services across Italy, starting with the island of Sardinia.
The two companies will start deploying a Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network in Sardinia shortly, starting by taking advantage of the ongoing work for the local gas network in the greater area of the island's capital of Cagliari, which includes over 50,000 lines of local loop unbundling coverage. The partnership is expected to include collaboration from a technology and trade/financial standpoint to evaluate, study and design next-generation services.
The agreement was signed by Renato Soru, CEO of Tiscali, and by Fan Qingfeng, Executive VP and Head of Global Sales of ZTE, at Villa Madama in the presence of the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and the Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao who is visiting high level Italian government officials to discuss issues in the fields of economy, trade, environment and technology.
"Our country cannot afford either the lack of next-generation network infrastructure or delays due to ongoing discussions," said Mr. Soru. "That is why we confirm our commitment to reach the ultimate goal of setting up in Italy a broadband network that will place the country among the most advanced in the world. We are working with ZTE with the aim of setting up a network open to all the operators and we hope it will be part of the wider national network."
The project appears to be a response by Tiscali to the initiative set up by rival Italian telcos FastWeb, Vodafone and Wind last May with the aim of launching a major Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) initiative worth €2.5bn, with the express intention of building a single point-to-point FTTH network covering the country's 15 largest cities within five years.
