According to August data released by the Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency, satellite TV keeps on gaining market share in such country and has already recorded a 42.8%. According to sources consulted by Tela Viva, such growth would have been fostered by Via Embratel. A study carried out by the market research company PTS shows that the operator recorded a 48% growth as of 2Q2010. If such growth rates are sustained, Telmex DTH will reach a million subscribers before year end.
Via Embratel has been operational for about two years. PTS data show that in 2Q2010, Sky, the main DTH, recorded a 9% growth as compared to the previous quarter; whereas, other operators', such as Telef?nica, Oi and Nossa TV, growth was stable and even negative in some cases. DTH market share recorded in June amounted to a 64% for Sky, 19% for Embratel and a 17% for the rest of the operators together.
With presence in the Brazilian market since 1996, upon 2010 first semester closing, Sky recorded 2,1 million susbcribers in such country. According to Dataxis' estimates, in June 2010, Via Embratel recorded 655,000 susbcribers. The operator relies on Nagra's CAS and Coship's STBs. It operates in Star One satellite.
