LG Electronics presented NetCast in Argentina
LG Electronics presented in Argentina its NetCast platform, which offers online content IP access through hybrid TV sets. In virtue of this project, the company partnered with national and international companies such as Terra TV, the video portal Mixplay, the La Naci?n Argentine newspaper, Twitter, YouTube, Picasa and Facebook, among others. Additionally, the company is negotiating with other OTT providers so as to offer movie rent over such platform. Its is available in the company's LCD and LED.
Contents added to the platform will be included free-of-charge and automatically for users. In order to connect, through cable or WiFi, at least a 1 Mb connection is required. NetCast does not allow open surfing through Internet but surfing through the offer of providers with who they have agreements. In the United States, the proposal includes Netflix VOD service, whereas in Brazil, for example, the company has recently closed the incorporation of Saraiva Digital and NetMovies, OTT providers with an important movie gallery.
On the other hand, the Latin America aggregator and integrator DLA has its platform ready to offer VOD through OTT, since it joined synergies with Mixplay -one of NetCast providers - which as DLA belongs to Claxson Group. Therefore, it might be part of the future proposal.
According to Cronista newspaper, at present, NetCast is available in two LCD models of 42 and 47 inches (From USD 1,664), but in 2011 the company is planning launch it in 32-inches LCDs. Additionally, LED devices are offered (from USD 1,564, the 32-inches one), LED 3D and Full LED 3D, at USD 10,000, the most expensive one, of 55 inches. All of them fitted with ISDB-T.
TV through Internet business model is being fostered also by Google TV, Apple TV, Boxee and Tivo, which enable access to online content through STBs. None of the afermentioned has been launched in Latin America yet. However, in the United States, Google's proposal has already faced the stop of some of the main channels -ABC, CBS and NBC- which decided to block the broadcasting of such products.
